Learn the foundations of Arabic calligraphy through the expressive and approachable Riqʿa script.
Step into the elegant world of Arabic calligraphy with this hands-on introductory class focused on the Riqʿa script—one of the most accessible and expressive calligraphic styles. Designed for complete beginners, this workshop introduces both the beauty and the discipline behind the written line.
Salman will begin with a guided overview of essential calligraphy materials, including paper, ink, and the traditional reed pen (qalam). Students will learn how to properly cut and prepare their own qalam, gaining an understanding of how pen angle, pressure, and ink flow shape every letter.
From there, the workshop will break the script down to its foundations: basic strokes, controlled movements, and structured exercises that train the hand and eye. Through step-by-step practice, students will learn how Riqʿa letters are formed and how consistency and rhythm emerge through repetition.
By the end of the class, you will have a solid foundation in Riqʿa, practical exercises you can continue at home, and a deeper appreciation for Arabic calligraphy as both a meditative practice and a living art form.
No prior experience required—just curiosity, patience, and a love for beautiful writing.
